What’s in a name?
MPW stands for Manucci, Pacioli, & Wedgwood.
Back in their time, respectively, Amatino Manucci, Luca Pacioli, and Josiah Wedgwood were considered pioneers, innovators, and thought leaders in the accounting industry. Their works, considered ground-breaking at the time, have formed the fundamental principles of accounting and bookkeeping as we know it today.
MPW understand that current changes in accounting, namely the rapid development in technology and FinTech, should be embraced and adopted by businesses and accountants.
What is deemed innovative today, MPW believes will become the fundamental standard of the future of the accountancy and finance profession. The software might change its UI, but the underlying principles behind it, namely double entry bookkeeping and cost accounting remain fundamental. We are still using the principles set out by Manucci, Pacioli, & Wedgwood.
That’s why we have named our firm after these prominent accounting figures and are taking them along for the ride!
Manucci
The Father of Double Entry Bookkeeping
In 1300, Amatino Manucci gave us the earliest written example of complex, yet sophisticated, double entry bookkeeping.
Manucci is credited with developing double entry bookkeeping to a high standard which then went on to influence bookkeepers and accountants for centuries to come.
He had very neat handwriting!
Pacioli
The Father of Accounting
In 1494, Luca Pacioli published his works on accounting informally called the ‘Summa‘.
The Summa‘s section on accounting was used internationally as an accounting textbook right up to the mid-16th century. The essentials of double entry bookkeeping have, for the most part, remained unchanged for 500 years.
Was close friends with Leonardo Da Vinci.
Wedgwood
The Father of Cost Accounting
Josiah Wedgwood became a leader of the Industrial Revolution following his works on costing and profitability during the Great Depression.
He is noted as the founder of managerial accounting principles including timesheets, division of labour, and work standards.
He was also a prominent slavery abolitionist.
